HISTAMINE AND THE GUT By Carol Savage M.D.
Diamine Oxidase (DAO) is the enzyme in the gut responsible for the degradation of HISTAMINE.

Histamine N-MethylTransferase [HNMT] is an enzyme found inside cells so it breaks down histamine within cells. Diamine Oxidase [DAO] is likely “responsible for scavenging extracellular histamine after mediator release.”
Although Diamine Oxidase [DAO] is found everywhere in the body, the bowels are perhaps the most important site of the action of the enzyme DAO.
DAO is synthesized by mature and undamaged enterocytes [gut cells] in the small bowel, so any gut damage would decrease DAO release ... ..more

What is the AHCY Mutation?

  4 years, 3 months ago

The AHCY (Adenosylhomocysteine Hydrolase) Mutation activates Homocysteine.
This defect is a prime example of just how challenging nutrigenomics medicine is, particularly when trying to sort through methylation’s domino effect. This zone activates SAM into Homocysteine, which is then utilized within the system or eliminated through the CBS enzyme. When AHCY defects are present, one could have the MTHFR C677T enzyme mutation yet still have normal homocysteine levels. And, if a coexisting CBS upregulation is present, homocysteine levels may be even lower, despite having complete C677T and/or BHMT defects. Furthermore, when such AHCY defects are present, there is less ... ..more

Malabsorption can be described as the body’s inability to absorb certain nutrients from the #gastrointestinal ( #GI ) tract. This problem has become one of the leading health concerns all across the US today. There are several different types of malabsorption syndromes and the most common ones include the inability to absorb fat, proteins, vitamins and sugar. Any thoughts on MTHFR and Lithium ?

  4 years, 3 months ago

#MTHFR #Lithium
Lithium has been known for years to be useful for #bipolar disorder. Despite all that is known about lithium and its impact on biochemical pathways, no one has defined the mechanism by which lithium has its impact on bipolar disorder. It is likely to be an effect on multiple pathways. There are a number of enzymes in the body that are known to be impacted and inhibited by lithium.

Lithium comes together with methylation at #COMT, the enzyme catechol-o-methyl-transferase. COMT breaks down #dopamine and #norepinephrine. Dopamine is a critical #neurotransmitter for motivation, focus and attention, among other functions ... ..more

1) Biopterin/Neopterin: For those with A1298C mutations, #BH4 (also known as tetrahydrobiopterin) levels are typically quite low. This test provides insight to how low these levels are and why. If neopterin levels are high, then I am considering the possibility of a lingering infection, inflammation or chronic immune response that is preventing #biopterin from being formed. Thus, this test provides information not only potentially low biopterin levels but also why they may be low.

If a doctor simply prescribes BH4 without understanding the need to address the inflammation and chronic infections, it is band-aide treatment over a gaping wound ... ..more
