The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme plays a role in processing amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase is important for a chemical reaction involving forms of the B-vitamin folate (also called folic acid or vitamin B9). Specifically, this enzyme converts 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. This reaction is required for the multistep process that converts the amino acid homocysteine to another amino acid, methionine. The body uses methionine to make proteins and other important compounds.

I found this excellent description in Amy Yasko's forum: ch3nutrigenomics.com. It was posted by one of the members on the site- raji: http://www.ch3nutrigenomics...
This is a private blog, but it is a very rich source of information about methylation, nutrigenomics and dietary supplementation

Here is a copy of the post:

"Common Terminology:

Methyl group: A methyl group is simply a single carbon atom bonded to 3 hydrogen atoms (CH3).

Methylation: Transfer of methyl groups from one chemical to another is called methylation. Essentially any chemical compound that has a methyl group as part of its chemical ... ..more

What is Epinephrine

#Epinephrine is one of the “Fight or Flight” #Hormones This NT is derived from #norepinephrine & released by the #adrenals. Hence, it is also known as #adrenaline . Epinephrine is also essential in #metabolism and regulates attention and mental focus & clarity as well as arousal (alertness & waking up), and thinking. It also inhibits #insulin release and raises the amount of fatty acids in the blood; both of which you’ll require for fuel. This very neurotransmitter induced anxiety and heart racing the moment you heard the word “ #Methyltetrahydrofolate ” or “ #methylation .” Epinephrine also raises your #bloodpressure and speeds up your heart rate.
High levels have been linked to sleep problems, #anxiety and #ADD or #ADHD. Low levels can result in #fatigue , lack of focus, and difficulty losing weight. ..more

MULTICHEMICAL SENSITIVITY…and #MTHFR
#Methyltetrahydrofolate [MTHFR]
The MTHFR Enzyme is in charge of making #L-Methyl Folate which is the final product of that enzymatic reaction.
L-Methyl folate [5-MTHF] is needed to convert #HOMOCYSTEINE into #Methionine.

HOMOCYSTEINE
With an insufficient amount of L-Methyl Folate there may be a buildup of HOMOCYSTEINE. Too much Homocysteine can cause all sorts of problems such as:
1. Increased blood clotting
2. Irritation and damage to the intima [inner lining of blood vessels]
3. Interfere with cartilage development and healing
As a result of the elevated HOMOCYSTEINE the person will be at greater risk of ... ..more

The #MTHFR mutations can affect the proper function of the immune system, and allergies are a result of immune system dysfunction.

There are many ways that the Methyltetrahydrofolate Reductase [MTHFR] enzyme can weaken the immune system, but I do know that if we do not have enough #SAMe then we cannot deactivate Histamine via the #Histamine N-MethylTransferase [ #HNMT ] enzyme.
If Histamine cannot be inactivated then the symptoms of excess HISTAMINE will be perpetuated.
You can find your Histamine Gene status on your #23andMe Gene Test ..more

1. BEFORE reading the articles to help prevent miscarriages below PLEASE Keep this in Mind:
Whenever reading articles about folic acid supplementation.. the MOST important thing is to ingest the RIGHT FORM which is FOLATE:
AKA. ... L-Methyl Folate [5-MTHF].------NOT SYNTHETIC = folic acid.
Some of the names for the GOOD L-methyl folate include:
1. 5-L Methyltetrahydrofolate
2. L-methylfolate
3. 5-MTHFR
4. N5-methyl FH4 ----------All of the four terms mean exactly the same thing.

Here's the LINK discussing the RISK of CANCER when taking excess FOLIC Acid.---and why it's so important to get FOLATE instead. http://chriskresser.com ... ..more

Those with MTHFR mutations scan labels, read websites or listen to their doctors rattle of conflicting terms for a nutrient they really need.

Understanding which form of methylfolate is best must be clear.

Why all the confusion?

Because there are so many different terms used for methylfolate.

By the end, you will understand everything you need to know about methylfolate.

More significantly – you will understand how to pick the right form of methylfolate.

Terms often used for methylfolate are:

Methylfolate
L-MTHF
L-Methylfolate
L-Methylfolate Calcium
D-Methylfolate
D-5-Methylfolate
Levomefolic Acid
Metafolin
5-MTHF
5-Methylfolate
5-Methyltetrahydrofolate
L-5-MTHF
L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate
6(S)-5-MTHF
6(S)-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate ... ..more

As far as I know the MTHFR mutations can affect the proper function of the immune system, and allergies are a result of immune system dysfunction.
