Julie Matthews, Author Nourishing Hope: Benefits range dramatically from child to child. Many parents report that their children make wonderful gains in language when starting a special diet, such as gluten-free casein-free – it may be an increase in words, speaking in sentences, or back and forth conversation. Some children make gains in behavior, a reduction in irritability or tantrums, or less hyperactivity. Other children have improvements in the quality of life, relief of digestive upset, fewer colds and infections, and are happier and healthier. While benefits differ, my experience as a Certified Nutrition Consultant specializing in autism for the past ... ..more

What are Neurotransmitters

  4 years, 1 month ago

Perhaps the best way to think of neurotransmitters is with an automobile example. Most automobiles in the United States are made to cruise at 60-70 miles per hour, perfect for interstate highways and that summer vacation. If we place that same automobile on a racetrack and drive day-after-day at 130 mph, two things would happen:
1). Parts would fail and
2). We would run the engine so hot that we’d likely evaporate or burnout the oil.
In fact, neurotransmitters such as serotonin act as the brain’s “oil”.

Comparable to a normal automobile on a race track, when we ... ..more

MTHFR C677T Mutation: Basic Protocol by Dr Lynch on February 24, 2012 in C677T MTHFR Mutations
Have one or two copies of the MTHFR C677T mutation? Don’t know what to do?

After working with 100′s of individuals with this defect, I’ve developed a protocol which may help a significant number of people.
I want to make it absolutely clear that while the MTHFR C677T mutation may be common across a number of individuals, the outcome of supplementing with various nutrients can vary tremendously due to other genetic defects, dietary and lifestyle choices and environmental exposures.

Yes: A world-leading neurologist has found autism can be prevented if parents make a series of lifestyle changes.

Paediatric neurologist and Harvard University assistant professor Dr Martha Herbert has been studying the disorder for 16 years.

She believes it all starts with the mother’s health before pregnancy.
“There are #genetic contributors, but it looks like environment is playing a big role,” she told 7News.

What is Dopamine ?

  4 years, 1 month ago

Think “delightful dialogue” with #dopamine since this #neurotransmitter is crucial for happiness, a sense of wellbeing, and language. It’s also involved in #muscle control and function. Dopamine is responsible for #motivation , interest, #mood , #speech , and contentment. It is also associated with positive #stress states such as being in love, exercising, listening to music, and of course, #sex . When you don't have enough dopamine, you may have difficulty initiating or completing tasks. Deficiencies also lead to poor #concentration , little or no energy, and lack of motivation. This could be the culprit if you lack the initiative to study the ... ..more

1) Biopterin/Neopterin: For those with A1298C mutations, #BH4 (also known as tetrahydrobiopterin) levels are typically quite low. This test provides insight to how low these levels are and why. If neopterin levels are high, then I am considering the possibility of a lingering infection, inflammation or chronic immune response that is preventing #biopterin from being formed. Thus, this test provides information not only potentially low biopterin levels but also why they may be low.

If a doctor simply prescribes BH4 without understanding the need to address the inflammation and chronic infections, it is band-aide treatment over a gaping wound ... ..more

Julie Matthews: There is overwhelming scientific support for “diet and nutrition intervention” for ADHD and autism. Many studies indicate that children with autism and ADHD have deficiencies in nutrients such as zinc, iron, fatty acids, and that supplements improved symptoms. There are studies showing benefit with nutritional support for autism and ADHD. There are also studies on B6 and magnesium helping improve symptoms of autism. One study on children with autism showed that a multivitamin-mineral formula improved all areas of autistic symptoms studied including: language, play, sociability, hyperactivity, cognition, eye contact, and more. The aggregate science screams “pay attention to ... ..more
